on the ProAc 2.5 vs 3.8(3.5) forget it, the 3-series has a much bigger footprint, and you will need a very very good amp to drive them properly. and in the end, i am not sure that they are better than a 2.5 with the right amp for you.i own the 2.5 and use rowland, bass is phenomenal, but my amp is expensive, i also like the thiel speakers you mentioned, they are more open sounding(time aligned like the vandersteen you are used to, which is probably the reason), but the 2.5 is an easy speaker too listen to all day
both are excellent speakers, i would buy whichever pair for which you can also find an amp which works at same time, make sure you listen too the amp/speaker combination before buying either first
