Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: monitor audio silver 5i, mass loading, any difference?

I auditioned a pair of of these very recently and whole-heartedly share your enthusiasm for them. I agree that the imaging was bold and I found the bass to be punchy and surprisingly strong for such small cabinets. The bass drivers didn't really seem to work much at low volume levels though. Many of these characteristics reminded me of some Tannoy Profiles I used to own.

I listened to tracks from a variety of genres on the Silver 5's and their larger siblings (I think these were 7s or perhaps 9s) and ultimately preferred the 5s! The larger speakers sounded strident in comparison, lacking focus and sweetness in the upper-mid-range and top end. I must disagree with your assessment of the treble though - I found it most agreeable and generally well matched to the lower frequencies. The whole sound was controlled and very well balanced without being 'restrained'.

Regarding the sand filling question, I would be prepared for some audible improvements, though I suspect that they would not be as significant as those gained from filling larger cabinets. Had my Tannoys been sand fillable, I probably would not have bothered, and I suspect that I would feel the same way about the Monitors. As for the material, I'm sure that sand would do, but I have heard of a couple of specialised filling materials. I can not recall the names but I know that at least one company is/was based in Great Britain. Regarding the sub, personally, I would not entertain the idea unless it is for home cinema. I hope this is of some help to you.
