Congratulations GR on another fine product

Congratulations GR on another fine product.

I recently had the opportunity to meet Danny of GR Research at his place of business in Wichita Falls.
I was looking at buying some ribbon tweeter replacements and Gary Dodd put me in contact with Danny. Danny sells a ribbon tweeter; I think it is called the Neo Three or something. Well, we ordered these tweeters and installed them. Well to say the least, I was blown over by the clarity of these. I can’t honestly say that I have heard anything better than the Neo Three. During our conversation on the phone Danny told me that he built a line source speaker with eight Neo Eights per side. The Neo Eight looks exactly like the Three except that it has about three times the radiating area. It is the same width and depth but three times taller. Well he has eight of these things per side standing I believe 6 feet tall. He also uses 9x 6.5in drivers in a vertical array. I am not to sure about the size of the drivers but I think they are 6.5 inch. Each driver is in a ported enclosure. I planned to drive up from Dallas to meet Danny at GR and pick up another pair of Neo’s and also get the opportunity to listen to the Line Sources. Unfortunately my friend Gary snatched the Line Sources away from Danny. Can life be the same without the Line Sources? At least I got to meet Danny in person and listen to some of his other speakers. Fortunately for me Gary lives about a 15 min. drive from me. He said I could come over and give them a listen. Having experienced the smaller Neo Three I had high expectations/reservations for these speakers. To be quite honest, I expected a full frontal assault with 20 brass symbols aside and not much below that. Well great was my surprise. These speakers sounded very nice. Well I suppose you can say that of a lot if speakers but there is a difference. Let me explain. Many speakers are extremely detailed and refined but they still reproduce music in an unbelievable way. What I am talking about is that all the emphasis is on the top end and midrange and the bottom end sounds small and artificial. To my ear most systems does not have the efficiency/speed especially in the lower octaves to sound real. In reality we listen to life-sized musicians with life-sized instruments. It seems to me that many systems scale the size of the performance down to the extent that we listen to Barbie and her friends performing on a shoebox. Ok, maybe that is a bit of an overstatement but you get the picture. Yes, you can turn the sound up. It will get louder to a point and then it will start getting rather irritating. I enjoy a system that can convey music in a life-sized and dynamic way. Maybe that is the reason that I ended up with tiny SET amps and massive horns. Please don’t think that I am mister know it all and that I snoop at other systems. It is rather a situation that I know what I really like. What impressed me the most about the Line Sources was the way that the system integrated the music as one big solid performance. The bass was solid and tight and part of the whole experience. I listened to these speakers for quite a while using a variety of music. They convey music in a life-sized and believable way. Human voices sound like human voices. Not somebody singing into a tin can. All instruments had a believable tone and presence in the room. The old saxophone that usually distorts or drive you back into your chair sounded airy, detailed and warm. O, about the full frontal cymbal attack. Nothing of the sort. The top end was as sweet and detailed as I have hoped for. Lots of clarity and detail but totally integrated with the rest of the picture. I can honestly say that for a guy that basically only listens to dynamic horns it is rather unusual to enjoy a direct radiating speaker. I would highly recommend these to anybody that wishes to buy his or her last pair of speakers. You will have to look hard and far to beat these. One last thing, the price is great. A couple of hundred below 2K I believe. Many speakers are judged as “very good for the price”. Price should have very little to do with it except for the manufacturer to recover his cost and make a living. The final goal “to reproduce music in a believable way has been achieved here. At the end you can either afford it or not. This I believe is affordable and great value for money.

Give them a serious listen if you are in the market for speakers.

All the best…
God Bless
