I always use sterilized fine sand. The smallest bag is 50 pounds, and it costs just a few bucks.You should look at sand under the microscope. Here on the west coast, the sand has a high quartz and feldspar. But if you go to Hawaii, you'll see lava bits, olivine, shell fragments, and even scraps of sea urchin spines.
