I doubt that your receiver has proper bass management (assuming so for the rest of this message).What he's talking about is the LFE out channel. If you hook the subwoofer up like that you indeed bass will be redirect to the sub. However, this is only for things like Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks. If you play regular ol' music CDs it won't route any bass to the sub. This is the whole bass management things. Check to see how the Onkyo works exactly.
What you can do with the X30 (I have both the Servo 15 and X30 here) is use that crossover in series with your front speakers. It passess off the front speaker's bass to the sub and plays the rest -- for music AND movies. It's a nice solution.
