For years, I've complained that those of us who have small, populated rooms suffer from a lack of selection, when it comes to speakers. Unfortunately, almost all the speakers of this genre stupidly boost the upper bass, which only exacerbates the problems of being in a small room. Some of my fellow 'philes have suggested investigating in-wall speakers, but that's a radical solution, no? But if you've exhausted all other options, why not check out in-wall speakers?
Of all the speakers I've tried in my small bedroom, my neighbor's Audio Physic Spark something-or-other (I forget which iteration) worked okay. And if you don't have a bunch of soft furniture a few feet off the ground, the Totem Arro is all right, too.
You will want to avoid not just speakers which put out strong bass, but you'll also want to avoid sensitive speakers. In a small room, even with your preamp all the way at MIN, you'll get BLASTED TO HELL AND BACK, if you use sensitive speakers.
Good luck, you'll need it. Those of us with small rooms have suffered mightily for years, and AFAIK, there aren't any total solutions to our dilemas.
