Synthesis LM250 speakers

I just picked up a pair of Synthesis LM250 speakers at a charity sale. Can anyone tell me about them? How old are they? What's their reputation?
Here's what I know: They're floor-standing 8" two-way speakers with a port. The tweeter sits in a freestanding piece of MDF above a slanted face at the top, the whole enclosure covered with cloth. They have threaded sockets for spikes, which did not come with them.
The tweeter is in an MDF cagework, with grills all around. Do you think I could replace the top grill (upward facing) with something solid, such as veneered MDF?

Oh, BTW, I have the original invoice. The buyer paid $1054 for the pair. Do you think $40 was a good price?
