I still think monitors are pretty much the only way to go for an undergrad, but they often fail at large scale, dynamic range, Mahler until you get real pricey. If vocals are your main thing, that's probably not so bad. Anyway, I've been over to check out the Triangle Titus' several times expecting a lot given the raves since they made class B. Didn't quite meet my expectations but they didn't suck. Someone mentioned they really improve a lot over time so maybe that was it. Still think the Triangles, and Monitor A's, are relatively cheap to power decently. NAD, Creek, Arcam, maybe Rotel integrateds should work and there are dealers for 3 of those four companies on the T. Shouldn't need much power, 35-50w/channel. Maggies are the tits, but probably need 200w/channel for even a modest room, you'll hear every clip and grain, should have min 3ft of space behind em.

I'm in a similar situation, though I'm now a few years out of school, in that I'm looking in the same price range and live in a city apt with suspended floors, small rooms, sheetrock, etc. $500-$1000 is a tough range. Let me know if you find a good solution. I'll probably go the DIY route.
