nOrh and AV Reality come to mind.
Both are internet direct, but have several owners in the Boston area (myself included), who would likely let you audition them.
the nOrh 4.0 and AV Tetra come to mind.Have heard good things about the GR Reseatch Paradox 1 (someone replaced maggies with them and likes their mids-search here for reviews), also the HE.10 from Adire (kits courtesy of DIYcable).

I have also personally been interested in DecWare's radial speaker and the EFE monitor that Pete W. reviewed here, but both of those are $1k.
With some higher eff. speakers you can use tube amps, which may or may not be your cup of tea (it is mine). If, for example you use the ASL AV 8 tube amps and a cheap pre, you could have more money for speakers.
