Re: DQ-10 mini- surround speaker idea! Only the TRULY insane apply!!!

Hi DMan,

I used 2 pairs of 10's (front channel w/DQ 1W & DQLP1 subs; rear = a pair of unmodified 10's) for years. The sound was rather amazing. I eventually used the Yamaha D1000 (think the number is right, that's the dolby delay with 20 or so different venues, ability to change reflection times, delay times, high and low freq xovers). Wow, I hadn't thought about that set up in a while - it was pretty amazing. Movies like twister did everything I needed (even without prologic ss), but it enhanced music too. You had a multi feature remote that would alow you to change any of the SS parameters from your chair. I think you'll find that the SS speakers will be loud enough to just provide the ambience - I got away with a 150 watt accuras amp for the SS channel.

Back to your question - I'm not sure you are going to really succeed without the midrange driver - that is super critical to the 10's sound. You might be better off looking for a pair of used 10's. I got a pair for $200 once. Dave I'm afraid you are going to get into a tradeoff situation here. It's pretty easy to seperate the Mid/tweeter & woofer/midwoofer circuits from each other (actually improves the sound), but you are asking about deceasing size (of the ss speaker, an assumption on my part), changing drivers ect.. You're really designing a homebrew speaker, not a 10. I think you need to find a used pair of 10's, use/remount everything but the woofer and tweak that. (no, I haven't forgotten about the baffles I promised you!)

You really should search high and low for a DQLP1 crossover. I think I remember that you have a sub already. That will be such an improvement.
