Consider an Energy ES-8. Its an 8", 100 watt sub that was extremely well reviewed by various mags including HT Magazine that thought so highly of it that they used it as one of their reference subs for a while. Goes down to a about 28Hz, but its pretty tight sounding and fairly quick. List on it is $300 but I know its available for well less than that.
