Steve:

It's YOUR money and YOU are the only one who you have to make happy with your purchase. If you cannot get the dealer to lend you a pair for an in-home audition, make him set up the speakers as closely as you can to the conditions you have in your home. I always brought a measuring tape with me and set the speakers up in the same approximate position as home. It ain't perfect, but sometimes it's the best you can do.

Second, make the dealer use electronics as close as he has to your home rig. I would even consider bringing my amp or amp/preamp in to drive with the speakers. A good dealer will let you do this.

Three, reviews and the opinions of others are most valuable in putting together a list of speakers to listen to. The only person with the final word is YOU. Many of the suggestions may not be available in your area. I wouldn't worry about it. I'd listen and decide on speakers locally available unless the selection was extremely limited or I wasn't satisfied with one of the speaker I auditioned.

Don't look to others to make your mind up for you. Trust your OWN ears and go with YOUR judgments as to what a speaker should do.
