Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: Maybe I'm not an audiophile

I held on to my ATC 50 Active speakers for only a few months.

No doubt accurate and ideal in recording studios, but not good in a domestic listening room, unless you can push them back another 20 ft from your normal speaker position.

They replaced KEF Reference 107s - the original ones with totally enclosed woofers and the rotating mid/tweeter head. The ATCs had to go and it was Stereophile's review of the Avantgarde Uno horn speakers that saved the day. They couldn't be more different from the ATCs and they offer the "tingle factor" that I'd not experienced with any other speaker.

I still have them but they are less happy in my 1000 sq ft listening room (with all sorts of speaker challenges) than in my previous "easy" 350 sq ft room. I'm looking to change my speakers - perhaps ATC 50 Actives need another try, although I doubt they would offer the excitement of a good modern floor stander - perhaps another horn design.
