RE: Recommend a good 10" 4 ohm midrange driver for under $150 for ESS AMT1

What you're asking for is simply not possible.

The driver in that design is highly specific. There are a number of things that make it rather unique to the design.

1. Impedance. (4 ohms, versus 8 etc.)
2. Sensitivity
3. As others have mentioned, Thiele small parameters. Fs, Qts, Vas, etc.
4. Frequency response, rolloff and distortion profile.

You could find a 4 ohm 10" driver with similar TS parameters, but the frequency response and sensitivity are wrong.

Or you could find a driver with a fairly close response (doubtful) but the TS parameters would require cabinet modifications.

I would say there is one possible hope. The Seas Prestige A26RE4 (H1411) available at Madisound - it is a modern version of an original driver which was used in the rather famous Dynaco A25. All this said, it would take a competent speaker designer to get you the response you are after (assuming, the original response) if it's possible at all.

Sadly, in these cases, it's usually best to replace or repair original components else move on. The biggest myth in DIY audio is you can take a specific design and replace original components with a driver that has "similar enough specifications" and get "close enough" results. I suppose, once changing the original design, what "close enough" is can cover quite a subjective range. I've heard guys replacing blown midrange or tweeter units with the *exact same model number* and reporting a startling difference in sound. Was it production changes? The fact the other surviving drivers are no longer new?

If I was incredibly partial to the high end units, I would have a competent designer combine them into a new 2-way or 3-way design using modern components. This will probably cost thousands. Then, I would shelf replacement parts to extend my usage another 10 or 15 years.

Sorry for grim news, but it's better to be realistic than give false hope...

Cheers,
Presto
