Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: Are the 10k speakers that good?

You often read reports that people like a smaller standmount over the company's biggest model while attending an audio show. The KEF LS-50 over the Blade for example. But this is the result of the room size and materials. Hotels in the US are typically horrible. Speakers with big bass induce more room related issues - while a small standmount or panel - with no bass, no dynamics do not induce bass related room problems. So sure the LS-50 will have big advantages over the Blade or other big speaker because bass is ~70hz well away from walls vertically rather narrow. So it comes across as clear and punchy. The big speaker has the paper thin wood walls vibrating (singing along behind) the initial notes muddying the bass. And quite often the room is too small for the bigger speaker on top. Most of the bigger speakers suffer in such rooms.

Now here's the thing though - the big speakers can sound fantastic - they require bigger rooms - most audiophiles I know are not multi-millionaires and their living rooms are not a whole lot if at all bigger than the hotel rooms - so smaller speakers (floorstanders or standmounts) are typically better targets. When forumers or reviewers say X is a better speaker than Y it still comes down to the size of room. The KEF Blade when properly set-up with space is much better than the LS-50. But you don't necessarily get that sense in the smaller hotel rooms where in fact it is very possible for the LS-50 sound quite a bit better.

My favorite speakers overall are the big horn designs that are like 4+ feet wide and 8+ feet tall - but they require a room at least 5 times larger than my room.

Here in Hong Kong rich audiophiles can't fit them in their homes - they literally rent out space for their stereo systems to visit on the weekends. Fortunately in Hong Kong everything floors ceilings walls are made from Concrete which is a huge advantage over the wood frames in north America. And in BC - everything is wood because we're on a couple of fault lines.
