Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RMAF

I just bought my ticket to RMAF. I did go to the cap area show and generally I think the rooms brought most of the equipment down a notch. There were a few nice rooms but none at the high level. RMAF has always had me wowed at some point. Sometimes the extreme Kimber room and almost always the Wilson rooms.

I find price is not always the indicator of a great speaker (or other component). Jeff Joseph probably has the best sounding price/value as most of his are below your $10k. There are other hits and misses, that is the one you mentioned and I know at CAF they did not show their potential. I don't think Jeff was there which would have made a difference. It is amazing how some people can set up a hotel room to sound amazing and some cannot. Even some with the most resources I have found miss the setup, everything ever set up by Harmon International and others.

Your question is really "how much should I spend for a good system" which is the most common question in our hobby. There is no limit to price. My advice is to buy at the level that makes you happy and that you can afford. If you cannot hear the difference in the next price level up then you are done (and rejoice!). Don't let others tell you what you hear. If you like it then buy it. If you cannot hear it then don't.

A good example for me are the YG Accoustics brand. I have maybe 10 setups of these and never liked them. I just don't care for the sound. Yet reviewers, fans and a lot of people praise their sound. OK, you all can have it. I don't care if I cannot hear what you hear.

So keep going to shows and when you find something you like then buy it.
