A tip of the hat to Goldjazz over at http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/ who provided a link to an interesting anecdote about Howard Huges and high end audio.
HH liked to watch movies. HH had significant hearing loss likely due to his living around and flying aircraft without proper hearing protection. After HH had set up home in the Desert Inn hotel in Las Vegas, he wanted to watch and to hear movies on his own personal system.
And so the story begins:
P.S. At the time he received this system, HH had secluded himself to a bed in a 250 square foot hotel room, likely with 8 foot ceilings. As a result, the screen and the speakers would have been within 10' to 12' feet of his listening position. As the system could be heard throughout the ninth floor of the hotel, it must have been loud indeed in HH's bed.
