What's wrong with sand, lead shot and kitty litter?

And what are atabites?

Sand is very cheap, lead shot is not, and I don't see any point in using
kitty litter. Sand will fill every cubic nanometer of space in the stand,
and is quite inert and heavy. Lead shot is heavier, but leaves plenty of
unfilled gaps, and is not inert.
