Speaker building

I recently worked with a speaker designer as he experimented with a new speaker. I was intrigued that the speaker box had such a drastic effect on the sound of the speaker.

The designer played the speaker with the back panel in place. The mid-range sounded hard and boxy. I could hear the driver's output reflecting off the (back of the) box. The designer then removed the back panel and played the same selection again. The hard sounding honk was gone, revealing that the driver was blameless.

This experiment would seem to vindicate the "lossy" or thin-wall design approach.
