Obviously they can, as your friend is doing it. It works for him, so as long as he enjoys it.... Who knows why some people use two pair, maybe it helps SPL in the room, it could possibly elevate certain frequencies the person finds appealing.
Would I do it, no. But I am an admitted purist, traditional, whatever you want to call it.
A couple thoughts as I was weighing whether to comment. The designer of Dynavector carts developed a listening system where you use small speakers in front and large in back, I don't remember if any mention of same brand, he also had a processor. The ambience and timing in this set up was said to achieve a great sound.
Another part of my brain says, would I listen to headphones with a different cup on left than was on right.
We know from home theater that all speakers should be timbre matched for seamless panning of sound.
So really your friend is breaking no audio law, it comes to taste, and a person should experiment if interested in the most pleasing sound quality results. It's smart to use the control to balance them in case the sensitivity don't match between the pairs. But the purist says just another piece in the signal path to possibly degrade it.
