The second generation Focus series (160, 260, 360, 380) were definitely better than the old Excite series. In fact, they were on the same level as Contour, albeit with plainer aesthetics. I thought Dynaudio was going to discontinue the Contour, so they surprised me when they discontinued the Focus instead. With the Focus gone, and the new Emit being introduced, Dynaudio has been improving the Excite range to be closer to the Focus without challenging the Contour. For example, the X18 combines the Excite tweeter with the midwoofer from the Focus 160.
I have listened to the Focus 260, but not the new X44. So I can't give you a direct comparison between the two. But generally speaking, Focus is superior to Excite in transparency, soundstaging, smoothness and refinement. Maybe a little more warmth too. I suspect those differences will be less with the X18 and X44 than the older Excite models, but I would still think the Focus 260 would be better than the X44 except in bass and dynamics.
I think the Focus 260 has excellent bass which is tight and well defined. They could be close to full range in a smaller room, due to room gain, but in a larger room they roll off around 30-35 Hz. They really don't need a sub unless your room has a bass suckout. The X44 will have more bass and deeper bass. I've read that it's designed to fill a larger room, or be a real rocker's speaker in a smaller room. I don't know how big your room is and how far away from the walls you can place the speakers, but if you have enough room for them you will probably appreciate the extra bass. If placed in a small room or too close to room boundaries, the X44 might have too much. One other point in favor of the X44s is that they should be slightly easier to drive.
