The subwoofer has power amp for the satellite. It is also possible that an active equalization specifically for Lifestyle 5 satellites is included in the subwoofer.I saw circuit diagram of the passive AM5 (I don't remember which series) long time ago. The woofer unit had a little more than a mere passive high pass crossover: some EQing was done with speaker level passive components. The woofers were directly connected to power amp: the "acoustimass" structure acts as a band pass filter, so there is no coil/capacitor/resistor for low pass crossover.
The crossover point may be somewhat high (somewhere in 150 - 200Hz).I would contact Bose first.
The subwoofer has bass/treble control as well, but that is different from the EQ'ing I mentioned. I think bass/treble control in ordinary receivers cannot do what the included custom EQ does.
