Not just Ford, but other brands too (I have some Fords also), are making it increasingly difficult to install/fit aftermarket audio gear. What will fit is often a problem, they're moving away from standard in-dash sizes and they use strange speaker mounting setups. So far, usually, you can buy some brackets that'll convert standard sizes to Ford.
I think Ford uses the worst speakers I've ever seen, never mind heard, in their stock audio systems. So bad that you can't even buy anything so poorly made, they need to be ordered in "millions" by an OEM because nobody even in a 4th-world country would ever choose to buy them on purpose. You are correct to think they are the first item to replace to grossly improve the sound. Don't bother with anything else until you've done them first. You don't have to spend much to get a huge improvement, even some Pioneer coaxials for <$100 drastically improves the front, and anything will improve the back. JL Audio are also popular for the next step, but by then you may want better/separate amps.
