General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Non-critical listening: Active Speakers or All in one unit

Just moved into a new place with my wife and she's put up well with me setting up my HT system in the rather small den. I want to set up audio in the living room but I've put her through enough wires and components and want to set up something simple for casual listening while sitting on the couch or having guests over. With so many options now for streaming (I use Chromecast and will be getting the Chromecast Audio) it no longer seems that one needs to rely on built in wireless from an All-In-One system.

My question is, given that I'll be using a Chromecast to stream, would I get better sound for the buck from an All-In-One system or a pair of active speakers that are placed side by side?

My living room is about 25x15. I'm not looking for flat audiophile response but something that will have a pleasing room filling effect without having to crank up the volume too high.

I'm looking to spend around $500 (US). Some All-in-one systems I've looked into, but not auditioned, are the Marshall Woburn, the JBL L8, and the Sony SRS X9. I know nothing about active speakers/monitors.
