Among the tests I use are a mono recording of an articulate Marlene VerPlanck for mono imaging, and choral recordings in a language I understand but seldom hear -- Latin serves well for me these days -- for clarity. This seems to me consistent with points you make.
My own personal designs focus on timing- and phase integrity. I toe-in my speakers to -- among other things -- reduce near side wall reflections.
