Huge speaker boxes without baffles? Its a whatzit please help?

Evidently someone in my hometown of Lincoln NE bought a large lot of high end stereo stuff in a storage auction. These got my attention, but I am wondering what they are? I am thinking they are high end speakers with no baffles probably home or hand made. To me they look alot like Frugal horns but the port on the front and in the back confuses me. He also had the TOTL Nakamichi Dragon Tape deck The 1000ZXL in gold and some other things so I am not sure if this was a money is no object project that never got off the ground or whatever. If anyone wants them I can try to get ahold of the guy and you can pick them up from my house at your convenience. (I have no idea who this guy is)
