Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Yes and Heresy!

Last weekend spent 2 hours with a KEF ls50. Wonderful midrange, sparkling high end that was often wonderful, sometimes just too sparkly, but the dynamic range seemed limited. A good speaker, maybe great, but not enough Oomph for me.

Spent two hours today with the Wharfedale Jade 3. I liked it more. I know, Heresy. The big different was the dynamic range. Tonally, with a few albums, like Aimee Mann and Bryan Ferry I also liked the sound more. But the dynamic range of the Wharfedale was a bit of a show stopper - excellent for a monitor. Very impressive. Will listen to the small Revel next.

Unfortunately, I then listed to many of the same songs via a Revel Studio 2. My room calls for monitors, I have a 5 channel system and am replacing some older Vandersteens. I have convinced myself to not spend another $20k on speakers! And the Revels were simply, as I guess should be expected, a different universe. Of course the bass was better, but the depth of image, richness in the midrange, etc. etc. Was just overwhelming. Truly a great speaker.

Guess I will need to tell the wife that we are eating at home move often. Thank God she is a great cook.

Mark
