RE: Why do speakers crackle

I read this post with much interest. I have a pair of Pilot PSV-2 16 Ohm speakers acquired 15 years ago.

One of the 12" Woofers make a crackling sound, the other Woofer one was playing fine.

I removed the both the 12" crackling woofer and the good one from both cabinets.

Physicak inspection did not yield any visible clues. I swapped them between cabinets to rule out a crossover problem, the crackle changed sides, it followed the bad woofer.

Next I put the bad woofer on my bench magnet down, cone up and connected my Sine Wave Signal Generator to the woofer.

I then started to sweep the woofer from 20 Hz up to 1000 Hz and found the crackle occured at around 400 Hz.

Tested the other woofer and could not make it crackle.

After reading the thread I now have more insight into possible causes.

It seems to me that it is a voice coil issue as a rubbing coil would be audible at all frequencies or more than just at 400 Hz.

The proposed solutions discussed seem tricky to implement, so I am tempted to send them both to a reputable speaker repair shop.

These are vintage Alnico 16 Ohm 12" Woofers with orange accordion cloth surrounds and are both physically in fantastic shape.

Can I get a recommendation for a speaker repair place that can do a decent job on the defective speaker while keeping to the repaired unit sounding the same as the defective unit?

I think that a re-cone would make the repaiered speaker sonically different. Maybe it is best to recone both?

Thoughts?
