Yes a set now is my main set of speakers. Back in the late '60s I. Had their successor, the W70D and they were great. I had forgotten how good they are. I picked up a set of the original W70s and replaced the old caps. Went head to head in a competition to sell off most of my speakers and keep only a pair or 2. In the beginning, I did not expect the W70s to survive as I had a number of later speakers. I soon realized they were going to be the ones to beat. In the end all else fell.
You are right about the midrange full range speaker is where a designer needs to concentrate. There are a number of very food ones out there from Lowther, Fostex and others. There now is a movement to use these and supplement them with a tweeter to add more highest and woofers to extend the lows. It would seem little difference from a typical 3-way design but it is not the same from what I am understanding. Many companies concentrated on the woofers and tweeter and seemed to just look for off the shelf mid range drivers.
