I agree getting the midrange right is where you start. I really enjoyed the video. Those look like some nice speakers and it seems he had all the right objectives considered in his design.You probably won't get any consensus on what the exact range of midrange is other than what was said in the video, its where most of the music is.
There is no issue with having a crossover in the midrange if it is done seamlessly and there is no way to audibly detect driver overlap. The crossover in my loudspeakers (also a MTM design) is at 500Hz, just about the middle of the piano keyboard. It is so well integrated I simply don't think about it.
