Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: How do I demagnitize my speakers, would that not make them useless...

Well, first off you can't demagnetize a non-magnetic material. Conductors are most often non-magnetic, such as copper, but it's conceivable that a ferrous metal could be part of an alloy coating the conductor or it's individual strands.

You don't want to demagnetize a speaker magnet, because it's magnetism is a vital part of how it works. You can, however, shield magnets with special shielding cups.

I have not shielded drivers with these cups, so I can't comment on how they change performance of the unshielded versus shielded driver. Perhaps some other inmates have done this and can comment on any changes they measured or perceived...

But the biggest question is: why? What's the perceived advantage of doing this? Magnetic fields and signals of all kinds are coursing through our homes and listening areas...

Cheers,
Presto
