The Altec 19 sounds fairly good because of a smooth frequency response with a gentle downward slope and reasonably smooth off-axis curve. It is very easy on the ears and capable of tremendous output with relatively little power. Few audiophiles would pay $7500 for a pair given that substantially better performance can be had for much less, but a collector with deep pockets...
