Brian Cheney, some questions about VMPS subs...

152.16.213.173

Hello,

I am looking at subwoofers right now, and I have written a few emails to you about the VMPS subs. Do you have any frequency response graphs for the three subs VMPS carries? Also, do you have information such as: tuning frequency, Xmax of the drivers, etc.

It would be really helpful to me if I could compare numbers between something like the Larger Subwoofer and the SVS line of subs. I'm sure others would like to know as well. Specifically, it would be great to see output across the frequency spectrum with X% distortion, etc.

Thanks for your help.

BTW, here is a post from Tom V., the "V" in SVS...

The big VMPS looks to be a solid woof...$700 prebuilt, +$70 for the *good* driver...say $770 delivered. Dual drivers...1 12/ 1 15"...and a PR.

A fellow AV enthusiast emailed me a few weeks ago about the VMPS units. I suggested he email VMPS and ask for the driver excursion specs, the PR specs, and the methods used for gathering the distortion data...from what I remember, VMPS wouldn't address any of these issues specifically....remaining very vague about the distortion measurements esp.

Price wise, a pair of the SV 25-31s would be about the same(we'd be about $20 more expensive)...and I think the dual 31s would do fine against the VMPS from 25hz and up. A single 25-31 will produce >100dB at 25hz...using a 10% THD limit...measured at 2 meters ground plane(this produces the same as 1 meter ANECHOIC)....and that's with a 180w amp.(and regular sine waves).

If you used dual 31s,with say 600w total, you should be closing in on 110dB anechoic. In a typical room, corner loaded...this would be well over 120dB using a 1 meter measuring distance.

The VMPS has the adjustable PR, so it can ,in theory, extend lower. But the lower you tune it, the more output you're going to give up in the more common bass frequencies. I wish Brian(from VMPS) had the time to stop by this forum and address some of the issues about their distortion gathering methods.

On *paper* the biggest VMPS doesn't have anything special over twin SV 31s.

both systems will have about 6 cubic foot of actual enclosure volume, the VMPS will have a little more actual cone area, but I'd be willing to bet the 15" driver they use doesn't have that much clean linear motor excursion...maybe 7-8mm(which is good).

And , the single PR isn't going to be any advantage over a pair of 4" flared ports.

All in all, I'd say the best case scenario for the VMPS would be it would nearly equal the SVs(>24hz)...but that's making some very favorable assumptions about the drivers and the PR used in the VMPS too.
