RE: About Magico speakers ... extremely impressive

I have speakers that have both Carbon fiber (Reference 3a...possibly the first company to use the material) and paper cones (Odeon). When a driver has to move a lot of air, I think something like carbon fiber, which is stiff AND relatively well damped is probably one of the better choices. I can also be light and give a high sensitivity (Ref 3as are 92 db/watt and an easy load). However, when the cone doesn't have to move a lot, as with my Odeon's where the 10 inch paper cone is back horn loaded, then paper might be one of the best materials as it is light and responsive. Lack of motion minimizes the material related colorations. As a result, both speakers are remarkably transparent and low in coloration. The Ref 3as have a mulitlayer cabinet but the horns are completely open at the bottom (they are a horn afterall).

Having heard a number of Magicos now (M5, mini I and II, Q5, Q1 and S5) I find them overall to be very smooth and transparent but a bit lacking in dynamic jump. Maybe, in pursuit of a very controlled sound, they have overdamped the things a bit too much IMO. Still, the transparency rivals a good ribbon or electrostat...which have no box with more umph in the nether regions (particularly the M, Q and S5s.)
