Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

KEF LS50 first impressions

Just heard these for the first time. They have about 20 hrs on them. I'm playing them through an ARCAM Alpha 10 with an inexpensive Pioneer DVD player as a source for CDs. They are accompanied by an older NAD active 10" sub.

These speakers are fun! Compared to the FOCAL bookshelf speakers they replaced ($700 jobs, relatively recent) they are brighter but the KEF is much more detailed and images better. In fact, the imaging is remarkable.

Can a speaker gush "nuance"? It's probably just detail. But I can see deeper into the mix than with any other speaker that I've owned, the best of which are Unity Audio Signature 1s and 3s from the 90's.

Hopefully the treble with smooth out a tad with more break-in. For now though, they are pretty fun. Probably not great for softened mood music. Certainly not great without a sub to back them up on those sorts of music needing tactile bass response.
