General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: Speakers in rooms - final thoughts

I have not used either of these specifically but in general, DSP Like conventional EQ, it can make a great positive difference correcting something and it can also be used to try "fix" what shouldn't be fixed and even make things sound worse in ways hard to describe. If there was ever a double edged sword in audio, it would be equalization. Correction via FIR convolution is another ball game but has some of the same rules.
Also another invisible pitfall is that you eq based on a measurement, a measurement that represents one location in space while the only thing you can EQ is the signal going to the speaker. As a result, your best bet is to measure the loudspeaker on a step ladder out doors etc, when you are trying to eq it. That way you greatly reduce what your room does, much of which is comb filtering which can't be fixed and may confuse. Limit in room EQ to cutting peaks, gradual lifts or roll offs, deep cancelation notches cannot be filled.

To expand on that a little...

I think a general rule of thumb followed by most DEQX users is to EQ the speaker response only above 200 Hz using on-axis pseudo-anechoic measurements, with FIR filters so you can do some phase correction as well, and then EQ the speaker + room below 200 Hz using IIR filters.

I would add that any time room response measurements are used to determine EQ settings, it's important to base the EQ settings on an average of multiple measurements taken from around the "listening window" otherwise you are at risk of making things worse.

Also, flattening the on-axis speaker response is not always the right thing to do. As I'm sure you're well aware, optimizing for power response and perceived in-room balance may result in an on-axis response that is intentionally non-flat.

Full range EQ is not for the faint of heart. I've messed around with it a few times but was never really satisfied so I put my effort into optimizing room treatments instead. I still use EQ on my subs though.
