I wonder how a cone speaker compares to a panel. Are Magnepans flatter in the listening area ?
Linearity in the bass region for dipoles requires careful placement. I used measurements to fine tune the final distance to back wall setting for my stats which ended up being about eight feet out in a 26' long room. The greater question has to do with the radiation pattern. I've always found dipoles create a more realistic image than monopoles - despite their ability to provide razor sharp imaging (which I don't really experience in a live unamplified setting).
How a horn would compare to cones and panels.
That's far too broad a question. There are dreadful horns with severe colorations (Altecs, KHorns) while there are others that are quite neutral. Some offer uniform directivity while others most certainly do not.
As for me, I prefer speakers that exhibit neutral frequency response, exceptional low level resolution and uniform directivity across the bandwidth. Most multi-way speakers I've heard fail the last criteria.
