To consider a powered subwoofer. If everything else is pretty good a sub might give you an improvement by handling the low frequencies so your Onkyo receiver and Polk speakers don't have to. You can probably find a sub on Amazon or Parts Express for waaayy under your budget and give it a try. You don't need your sub to provide loud thumping bass, just to fill in the lower octaves. If you get one with speaker level inputs it will filter out the lowest frequencies from the Polks which may increase their clarity since they won't be asked to try and produce so much bass. The same with the Onkyo, with the sub making the bass, all it's power can go into the mids and high frequencies. You ought to be able to find a cheap sub and save the rest of your budget towards a major future upgrade. Or spend it on music. Or beer. Or maybe even the kid...
