Bravo on your daughter's taste in music! Ry Cooder is among my very favorite artists, it's nice to hear he has fans among the younger generation.
As for speakers of the type and cost you seek, the choices are many. And this is a segment that has seen some terrific gains in sound quality per dollar spent.
I've always had a soft spot (ear?) for KEF's smaller offerings. In light of that, I would recommend you consider their Q300 which is actually slightly under your budget at $649/pr.
Also, because I'm a big fan of their CDT tweeter, I would recommend Gallo's CL-2 at $794/pr. One big bonus in working with Gallo is that they offer a 60 say in-home trial and will pay shipping both ways (!!) in the event you return them.
