Side mounted shouldn't matter with a low enough crossover. Low bass is Omni. You can't even locate it without the harmonics to guide you. I've heard systems where the subs are feet away from the main speakers and all the sound appears to come from the those main boxes. I've seen listeners standing right next to subs saying there's no sound coming from them when it's obvious there is and when you can feel the driver pumping away with your hand on it.
