Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE:if you come from listening to a Theil or a Magnepan

While what I'd like to compare in my system consists of a lot of possibly bright speakers, that is why I would like to check them out in my system, so that I could be sure one way or the other. OTOH, with the exception of the Vandersteens, I own NO speakers with metal dome tweeters. I don't know of anyone who would call Hiquphon tweeters bright, though I do believe they are considered to be very good at rendering detail. I believe Freed speakers that used Hiqphons are still reasonably well respected. and not considered bright. Morel MD55's have never to my knowledge been called bright, detailed, yes. And my Focal woofers have been called highly articulate, but never bright. Those are the drivers I am measuring the Vandersteens against, the ones that sound a lot like Vandersteens if you toss light blankets over them. My new favorites, KEF 105.2's are not bright. Until I get them into the house Friday and listen for a time I can't say if they are more detailed, but I suspect they are. Furthermore, after I recap them and bypass the old electrolytic caps I'd be shocked if they were not more detailed. Furthermore, Vandersteens with Teflon caps bypassing those 3 caps need light blankets tossed over them for them to sound like stock Vandersteens, IMO. That some like the Vandersteen sound is not surpising as they do MANY things right. Tonally I think they are slightly truer to the sound of the source than are my Morel based speakers. My 1801's might be their equals in tone, I have not compared them, but it was when they were my primary speakers and I heard the Vandersteen 3?Signatures, what ever version was current in 2000, that I first determined that the Vandersteens sounded muted. Some reviewer was pushing that setup as being the perfect system. He has the Sony ES player the reviewer was pushing, but he also had an Electrocompanet DAC, and playing through the DAC spanked the Sony which this reviewer said was the end all, but my older Sony ES with Black Gate caps sounded even better, but through his Vandys, it sounded muted as compaired to my 1801's or my Accoustat 3300's which had a documented roll off of high frequencies, hardly what you could call bright!
Best Regards,

Lou
