That is the balancing act. When I had darker sounding gear I used to use LT opamps which were bright, but with darker gear, they sounded detailed and not bright. Upgrade the associated equipment and they make your ears bleed. I have not heard B&Ws with my gear, but as I recall they seemed a little bright to me. I was listening to CDM9 NTs at the time. I'd love to try a pair in my system to make a final determination. I suspect many female vocals would leave me with bleeding ears, and listening fatigue. Likewise my JH3s have me spoiled as the Hiqphone tweeters are detailed w/o being bright like metal domes often are. Thus when I listen to stock Vandersteens and I either don't hear things I know are there, or more often they are attenuated, I get listening fatigue as I know I should be hearing it Lima Charley, but it's muted, as though someone tossed a blanket over my speakers. Freed used Hiquphons as well, and was well received for rendering details smoothly. That the Vandersteens don't make your ears bleed when they use metal dome tweeters told me there was something going on in the crossovers. When mine were initially bright after installing the caps came as no surprise to me, rather I was surprised when it mellowed out and seemed to be due to the caps. Anyway, as a rule I prefer soft domes to metal as they are not as bright, but good ones still seem to render similar detail.
Best Regards,
Lou
