Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

RE: Vandersteen 2CE Signature fix

They are all in series, so I just bypassed them all with a single Teflon cap per crossover. You could use 3, but that's a pretty expensive way to go. The crossover is burried behind some insulation stapled to a support.

It's not easy to get in there with a soldering iron, getting to the top of the WonderCap is the real challenge. An iron with a narrow tip helps. You can lay the speaker on it's back so that gravity helps, though I did it with the speaker standing. Then again, I do a LOT of soldering. Putting a big glob, gotta love technical terms like glob, of solder on the capacitor leads makes it easier too so you don't have to hold the iron cap and solder. I took long nose pliers to form a hook around the plier nose like a shepard's hook in the end of the capacitor leads to hold the solder glob. I also ran the leads to the right of the circuit laying the cap across the top of the circuit rather than going across it. Thay way you can lay the cap down and don't have to fight it while you solder. I understand you can use a heat gun and loosen the circuit board too, but I didn't want to get that deep into it. I was looking for a fast and dirty fix if one existed as my speakers should live again.

I figured I'd be back in there, so I just pushed the insulation back in place but some 3/6" screws with washers can be used to reattach it. My electric staple guns could not fit in there to restape it. I'd give it 10 hours of play or so before I listened to Nora Jones or other singers/music which can sound shrill on bright systems. I used V-caps, others might be fine immediately. I never noticed this using them in electronics, but perhaps I did not play potentially bright material immediately as I did this time...

Typed this on phone and can hardly read it so I apologize for any typos.

Best Regards,

Lou
