Hi-
So we can help you better, please identify the more-expensive speakers, and if you can remember, please explain in what respects the Dunlavys bested them sonically.
Yes, I have heard various Dunlavys and I reviewed a pair of a smaller model when I was writing for TAS.
Honestly, I think that today you can do better, and, honestly, I think that back in the day, you could have done better. One data point being that I never heard of a US pro studio switching from Duntech to Dunlavy. Indeed, Sony Music Mastering continued privately to import Duntechs long after Duntech pulled out of the US.
If you don't feel like responding in detail and just want a recommendation, that's fine too. Sonus Faber Olimpica III, at $13,500, is, compared to the Duntech/Dunlavy monoliths, svelte and stylish, and should have extension to 35 Hz in-room. Sonus Faber is part of the same family of companies that includes McIntosh and Audio Research, so, if they go out of business, I think that that will be the least of our worries--keeping off the Soylent Green conveyor belt will be at the top of the Do List.
At least in the looks department, I think the Olimpica III has it all over the Harbeth 40.1, which I think is rather ungainly looking. I reviewed that speaker's predecessor many years ago for Stereophile.
Best of luck,
jm
