I wonder, could there have been something wrong with the review sample used in that very negative review? Sam Tellig reviewed them around the same time frame and praised the heck out of them. He called them a rather mellow sounding "music lovers" speaker, if I recall correctly. They were then listed as a Stereophile "Class B" component.

I've always thought that it is difficult to predict how an individual might perceive the sound of any component. Comments made here and elsewhere would certainly lend credence to that idea...
