I use S3/5R2's in my office system and like them a lot. They're not up to a bigger room or real bass, though.

My favorite speaker in this price range, by far, is the Peachtree D5. Take an LS-50, make them far more cosmetically attractive, swap out the metal dome tweeter for a nice smooth soft dome tweeter, add lower bass, more dynamics and a wider, more natural image.

And there you go. A terrific bargain for $999. I'm listening to Beethoven string quartets on them as I type these. But the extra dynamics and bass makes them great for rock, too.

I'm also very fond of the $1500 Ascend Acoustics Sierra-2, but not sure they're worth the additional $500 over the Peachtrees.
