If you get the surrounds, you'll still miss any impact from your theater. A sub will get you farther (enjoyment-wise) until you have the budget for surrounds. My HT has three subs (LFE, ctr and R/L). I traded the R/F sub for some tower speakers and immediately missed it. I moved my 2- channel sub into its place and bought stereo subs for the music system. For me, they make that much difference.
