RE: "...people were into sounds good to me rather than fidelity."

I dare say that most audiophiles are trying to strike some sort of a balance between "Fidelity To The Signal" and "Fidelity To The Way Music Sounds (As I Remember It)".

Everyone "personalizes" their system, to one degree or the other, just as Gordon Holt himself must have done. Part of the reason why this is true is that live music does not always sound exactly like the recorded equivalent of live music. Recordings usher in a load of distortions and sonic artifacts that, to many ears, work to destroy rather than support the musical experience. A system that transmits all of the distortions, sonic artifacts, and errors that have been superimposed by the recording process is not necessarily a "listenable" or "lifelike" sounding system. Recordings are but the first step in the process of recreating the live musical experience in our living rooms. What would be the point in assembling an expensive system if it is never going to sound like music *as we remember it*?

That said, we all learn to accept record playback as something different than live music, even though it is a close relative of live music. It is a game we play.

"Sound Good To Me" is, or should be, about reality. That motto should be more than good enough so long we are not lying to ourselves - as long as the sound of music "as we remember it to be" is our reference. We never stop bearing the cross of compromise, however.
