When I got interested in music and sound back in the day, I decided to replace my existing "stereo"--one of those plasticky Panasonic things with a turntable built into the top. So I bought a second-hand (or third/fourth/fifth-hand) stereo from a guy in my dorm at college: a Dual turntable, an ancient Pioneer integrated, and a pair of KLH-23s. Hardly a fancy system--I recall that the amp was extremely susceptible to RFI, and this during the CB craze of the 1970s!! But compared to that Panasonic, I thought the sound was glorious. And I bet that it was actually pretty decent, thanks mainly to those 23s. The bass from those things was formidable, given enough current to drive them (a significant qualifier).
How I envy my younger self, starting to enjoy quality sound reproduction. Sure, I've got a much nicer system now, but back then I couldn't wait to get home to listen to music.
I wish I'd kept my 23s!
