For me, the advantages of active "studio monitors" are:
A. The ability to EQ the speakers to match room acoustics and personal taste.
B. Active speakers take up less space as you don't need outboard amps.
C. Flat frequency response? That's just the starting point...
The disadvantages, as I see them, are:
A. Audiophiles don't get to play around with different amps. Which can be fun.
B. The visual aesthetics of pro monitors pisses off the wife.
C. Audio dealers lose the ability to sell expensive amps.
D. It's very difficult to hear a demonstration in a domestic-type environment.
The best you can do is try to find someone using "studio monitors" in a home
who will play them for you, and see how you like them.
